A fanfare of trumpets sounded from some hidden speakers, the lights dimmed and a holographic projection in the centre of the room began to spool a video which proclaimed the benefits of the newest full-D Senz-a-Tron gaming rig.

“Knew it,” grumbled Phemie. The party was just an expensive cover for an elaborate sales pitch, like she’d thought.

While the marketing spiel played out centre stage, she spent the time examining the other partygoers, trying to work out what it was that made Myrddin pick out the policeman, Isla and Andy. And why only them? Would it not be better to recruit even more people, even if….

And then she worked it out. Over at the far side of the room, a guy dressed as a knight bumped into a dryad, and didn’t even apologise. It was like he didn’t even see her. And then she spotted one of Sonya’s cronies grabbing at an elf’s ear as if trying to dislodge a prosthetic.

They don’t see the magic. That must be the difference.

Pointing at the ceiling, she asked the policeman, “What d’you see up there? The lights I mean?”

“The moving ones?”

“Aye.”

He squinted up. “Little fairy things buzzing about on wings.”

“Bright pixies,” Phemie affirmed. “And over there?” She pointed at the nearest dryad.

“A tall creature, like a living tree.” His forehead creased. “I’m not sure how they do that.”

Phemie shuffled in her seat so she faced him better. “Did anything… weird ever happen to you when you were playing the game?”

“How d’you mean?”

“Quests that didn’t work out the way you expected… characters that seemed more than just programming… Unexpected stuff.”
